Brighton & Hove Arts Council will be producing their first ever Poetry Festival to celebrate the Art of Poetry and to announce the winners of the competition.

We are delighted to announce that Carol Ann Duffy will be reading a selection of her poetry accompanied by her musician Mr John Sampson.

Also we will kick off the festival with an all star cast from Hammer and Tongue who will also run a Poetry Slam competition featuring finalists from the University of Brighton.

Attila the Stockbroker
Attila the Stockbroker – Brighton’s very own Punk Poet

To give the event a proper anarchic feel, Attila the Stockbroker will be making a guest appearance to give his powerful, political and poetic take on punk poetry.

The winners of the Poetry competition that runs from July 15th – October 15th will be announced and the presentations will be made by Carol Ann Duffy.

Also at the festival we plan to give an opportunity for the best entries’ contributions to be read out either by the writer or another individual. As the name ‘Festival’ implies we want this to be a celebration of all the poetry talent in the region for both the people of Sussex and the students at University.

The Old Market is an iconic venue for Arts events in Brighton and Hove. Not only will you be able to enjoy top class poetry but you can also enjoy the atmosphere of Tom’s Bar with a drink in your hand. The Poetry Festival will be an all seater theatre style event with a maximum of 220 seats available. Tickets are £20 each and are available at the Old Market Box Office. Tel Number 01273 201801. (Sorry, there are no concessions available)
